To proponents of green growth, new innovations such as electric cars will help “decouple” growth from carbon emissions and allow humans to live a life of plenty within the limits of the planet. Growth, the process by which a country increases the amount of goods and services it produces, is supposed to raise people’s wages and provide governments with an income that can be invested into public services such as schools and hospitals. According to the idea of “green growth”, whose adherents include the World Bank and the White House, so long as the right policies are in place, societies will be able to enjoy endless growth while reducing their carbon footprint. Subsidised by governments and promoted by the automotive industry, they fit smoothly with the economic ideas that guide how policymakers think about reducing carbon emissions. By 2040, according to the International Energy Agency, the global demand for lithium will have increased more than fortyfold.Įlectric cars improve on the status quo without transforming its rapacious use of resources. As the demand for electric vehicles grows, the mining and refining of their components will intensify, further damaging natural ecosystems. The 14kg of cobalt that prevent the car’s battery from overheating have probably come from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where cobalt mines have contaminated water supplies and soil. Then consider that the battery of an electric car uses 8kg of lithium, likely extracted from briny pools on South America’s salt flats, a process that has been blamed for shrinking pasturelands and causing desertification. Its carbon footprint is around three times smaller than its petrol equivalent, and unlike a regular car, it emits none of the greenhouse gases that warm the planet or noxious fumes that pollute the air. Sleek and nearly silent, it is a good example of how far the world has progressed in fighting the climate crisis.

It was a really fruitful experience that knocked into me this interest in actually working with these historical instruments. I’d pick a different instrument every week and read about it online, learn about it and then go and get to know it in person. In the early years the place wasn’t very well known so nobody was coming to tours, especially in the dead of winter, so I’d have all this time when I’d be alone. I got hired as a tour guide, and I did that for eight years. That was the turning point for me, having access to any electronic instrument you can think of. So when I was 20 years old I got a job at a musical instrument museum in Calgary, of all places. Sarah Davachi: I was studying some early electronic music from the ’50s at school and it got me curious, but none of that music really did much for me. What was your introduction to electronic music? Like, I’m never gonna own a Jaguar and I’m okay with that, but it doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate that a Jaguar should exist just because I don’t have access to it.” “The only analogy I can think that makes sense is like with cars, comparing a Jaguar to a Honda – that’s a thing that people can understand. It’s harder to go find a 1968 Moog and be able to A/B those instruments, so I think people get a little bit bitter about that,” she continues. “You can go into Guitar Center and play a $5000 Gibson and feel what that feels like. No, there’s so much more to it than that. “When you’re playing a synthesizer it’s so unfair to say you’re just turning knobs it’s as unfair to say that someone who’s playing guitar is just strumming. “For some reason with electronic instruments, people just don’t want to understand that they’re instruments,” she assures me. This obsession has been a constant throughout her career, and she’s keen to illustrate how much the analog synthesizers of the 1970s have just the same distinctive, unpredictable qualities as any traditional instrument. Now based in Los Angeles, Davachi is currently working on a PhD in Musicology at UCLA, diving headfirst into organology, the study of instruments. A mixture of confident, studied synthesis and gloriously restrained instrumental performance, they sound something like Pauline Oliveros collaborating with Arvo Pärt, or Stars of the Lid covering John Taverner. This year, Davachi has been touring almost non-stop and somehow has managed to find the time to put out two proper albums: April’s Recital-released Let Night Come On Bells End The Day and Gave In Rest, on Ba Da Bing!, that emerged earlier this month.īoth albums illustrate just why Davachi is receiving so much attention right now. The discovery of analog synthesis took her on in exciting direction that she’s followed ever since – it even helped renew her interest in the piano. She had studied piano from an early age but burned out quickly, resenting the anxiety of classical performance. Early Genesis.”ĭavachi’s path to becoming a world-renowned synthesizer expert is quite unique. “Todd Rundgren, Beach Boys, George Harrison, Genesis. “I actually have a plan to do a cover record of classic rock songs,” laughs Sarah Davachi as we start talking about musical influences. In this interview, John Twells meets LA-based composer and academic Sarah Davachi, who opens up about her introduction to electronic music and ongoing obsession with musical instruments, from vintage synthesizers to pipe organs. I found the Oura’s app robust, and it fed me useful information. Which meant that I went to Oura’s app not when I was prompted by something that caught my attention on a device’s screen, but when I had the time and inclination to really absorb the Oura’s granular sleep information. On the data front, the Oura has no display-it doesn’t even tell you if it’s charged-so I could pretend it was a dumb device. Its low-key personality makes it a genial everyday companion. It’s sized like a piece of jewelry, and I found it comfortable enough to be worn 24/7. It’s a gossamer-light band made of titanium that’s just a bit bigger than a wedding ring. This elegant device was my Editor’s Choice, largely because of how easily it slips into the background. Which led me to a revelation: A couple of days after I was done, I looked down at my fingers and realized I had simply forgotten to take off the Oura Ring ($300 and up). Most devices then roll that info into a sleep score.Īfter consulting with five sleep specialists, I settled on six trackers to evaluate, wearing each of the devices at the same time for 14 consecutive nights:Īfter I was done with the two-week-long evaluation, I was pretty happy to take off the devices and get back to sleeping in just my pajamas. Today’s consumer-grade trackers are relatively inexpensive, rechargeable devices that may use your movement and other metrics such as your heart rate to log your sleep duration, sleep stages, or the number of times you awaken at night. There’s even a term for it: coronasomnia. That has taken on added momentum as more Americans like me report sleep problems amid the disruption of COVID-19. Wearable sleep trackers are part of a $30 billion sleep improvement industry that includes everything from sound machines to sleep drugs that promise sounder slumbers. Since I’m a tech editor at Consumer Reports and self-professed gear geek, I planned a deep dive to find a device that would help me better understand my out-of-whack sleep patterns. After trying the easy stuff, such as buying a squishy down pillow I liked at Marshalls, I decided to turn to technology. “Sometimes the music can sit comfortably between two, three, four genres so it would be a completely new sound,” she said. In fact, it’s often crossing several genres. “I think we’ve got meme-rap in the works, hyper-pop in the works, things like that just to reflect what’s going on in genres,” she said, before pointing out that while Lorem, Pollen and Oyster may be genreless, the music on them is not. Szabo said that Spotify is tackling this by adding more genre options. One challenge is that this submission tool involves tagging tracks with one or more genres, which can feel awkward for some of the music that might be well-suited to these genreless playlists. How do artists get onto these genreless playlists? Szabo said that the submission tool in the Spotify for Artists dashboard is critical, promising that “we religiously go through our submissions”. In a way, that’s a riposte to one of the criticisms of playlists in general, which is that they can lead listeners away from knowing who the artists are, let alone caring about their stories. Meanwhile, the company is also creating video content around featured artists on these playlists, which gets distributed on YouTube and social networks. Pollen and Oyster now have attached ‘studio’ programs, where artists record original tracks, covers and collabs for Spotify. “At its very core that’s what it is, and we hoped that with design and the right mix of artists, and just being able to speak to these avenues of fans that it would become something more. Playlists are “just a name slapped on a list of songs” she pointed out. And then Oyster is the equivalent in Spotify’s Nordic territories. Szabo talked about Pollen as Spotify’s first experiment with a genreless playlist, with Lorem sharing an ethos with it, but targeting a different audience. That’s where we question the status quo in terms of programming,” he said. If culture is moving at that rate, we need to move with it. “The more spices to create with by the artists and the creators, the more spices to try out and it becomes a feedback loop. Hazheer opted for a cooking metaphor in his description of this trend, with music represented as different spices that can be added to the overall meal of a playlist. It’s driven by culture, and it’s driven by these communities.” I think they share a lot in common with the artists that we are putting in these playlists. These are listening communities that we’ve seen on Spotify, off Spotify, on social media. “It’s historically how we categorised music, but we realised today that the way people listen is more community based,” she added. Szabo stressed that “genre is still totally important” for Spotify and its rivals. She noted that in the days when people were buying music and had a limited amount of money to spend: “Boxing yourself into a genre had a purpose… but with having access to everything through the digital transition, suddenly it’s no risk to experiment and explore.” “We realised there was a gap where we needed to curate for culture rather than genres… Genres were expanding, and artists are experimenting with them,” said Olofsson, of Spotify’s initial moves into genreless playlists. Spotify’s Lizzy Szabo (editor, North America), Sophia Olofsson (studio project manager, Nordics) and Iman Hazheer (senior editor, Nordics) were the explainers, in a session moderated by CD Baby’s market development coordinator for Europe and the UK, Henriette Heimdal. Today at Music Ally’s Sandbox Summit Global online conference, we heard more about how (and why) those playlists work. Some of Spotify’s most interesting emerging playlists – Lorem, Pollen and Oyster for example – are designed to be ‘genreless’. Playlists have become a hugely important part of the music streaming world, and many of them have a tightly-curated theme, be it a musical genre or a specific mood or activity. “We had so much fun shooting this that it didn’t even feel like we were continents apart. Combine the whiskey, lemon juice, lime juice and syrup. It ends with what Discovery Plus called “a virtual dream double-date” involving the hosts and Garten’s husband Jeffrey and McCarthy’s husband Ben Falcone. The drink evolved and the egg white component was added later but is often referred to as optional. It was served in a claret glass and garnished with berries. The first episode sees Garten coaching McCarthy on making the perfect whiskey sour, then the pair discusses Garten working in the White House budget office and McCarthy’s days studying fashion. Jerry’s recipe called for a wine glass of bourbon or rye, the juice of half a lemon and a large teaspoon of powdered white sugar dissolved in sparkling water. Simply shake up the whiskey sour ingredients, egg white included, without ice until it's foamy, then add ice to the shaker and shake again until ice cold. The most common include adding an egg white foam to make a version called the Boston Sour. “For fans, the intimate conversation is full of little-known stories from their lives, including tidbits on how they met their spouses, Ina getting her pilot license and Melissa’s first time doing standup in New York City.” Ina Garten’s first drink came out of a bathtub at a Dartmouth fraternity house. Ina Garten's whiskey sour recipe is a perfect base for some simple variations. “It’s been a long time coming for these two superstars to meet, and it’s incredibly endearing and entertaining watching them chat like old friends,” said Courtney White, president, Food Network. Yoder places Huygens's work in the context of his time by examining his relationship with other scientists and the priority disputes that sometimes motivated his research. Joella Yoder details the creative interaction that led Huygens to invent a pendulum clock that theoretically beat absolutely uniform time, to measure the constant of gravitational acceleration, to analyze centrifugal force, and to create the mathematical theory of evolutes. This case study examines the interrelationship between mathematics and physics in the work of one of the major figures of the Scientific Revolution: the Dutch mathematician, physicist, and astronomer, Christiaan Huygens (1629-1695). Finally, the role of Huygens in the rise of applied mathematics is addressed. The reception of Huygens' masterpiece, the Horologium Oscillatorium of 1673 and the place of evolutes in the history of mathematics are also analyzed. A discussion of Huygens' relationship with other scientists and the priority disputes that sometimes motivated his research help place his work in the context of the period. She also describes the way that each of these important discoveries arose from the interaction of Huygens' mathematics and physics. Professor Yoder offers a detailed account of the discoveries that Huygens made at the end of 1659, including the invention of a pendulum clock that theoretically kept absolutely uniform time, and the creation of a mathematical theory of evolutes. However, Camtasia was created with the novice in mind. It can be argued that Camtasia is not as robust as some of the powerful video editing tools, particularly when viewed side-by-side with programs such as Final Cut and Adobe Premiere. Although many people think of the software as a screen recorder, it excels in editing whatever users may have captured, and it provides the option to share finished videos on different platforms and formats. Thankfully, Camtasia offers these solutions. YouTubers and other social media users who would like to share videos online, for example, need a powerful tool that will combine professional video editing with simplicity. But is Camtasia good for video editing? Beginners, as well as professional video editors, don’t just want a program that will capture their screen, especially if they are not so keen on creating tutorials. The software has been touted as one of the best screencasting tools available and is considered the industry standard when it comes to screen recording. The full version has a couple of paid-plans, including individual plans (starting at $249), an education plan (discounted up to $152.10 for 15 to 24 users), and others. However, there is a watermark across your output because the trial version is only for evaluation purposes, and not for sharing your edits. Note that the 30-day trial version is fully functional, meaning there are no unusable features. So you can test the program for free to see if it meets your needs before buying it. The good news is that it offers both a free and paid plan. The powerful screen recorder/video editing software has gained rapid popularity, with over 24 million people using it. The software supports most video formats and is equipped with features that make it easy to create a video tutorial and demonstration. What Is Camtasia?Ĭamtasia is a computer screen recording and video editing program that works on Windows and Mac. That means more people are on a quest to find full-featured video editing programs that can create high-quality videos with the least difficulty.
